Coastal Clean-Up and Marine Waste Collection

Clearing plastic waste from beaches and raising community awareness of the effect of plastic pollution on marine life and fishing livelihoods.

Environment and Climate ActionOngoing

Project Overview

Volunteers clear plastic and other solid waste from stretches of coastline used by fishing communities, and work with residents on the handling of household waste that would otherwise reach the sea.

The work pairs collection with awareness: a beach cleared once will fill again unless the waste stream that feeds it changes.

Key Activities

  • Beach clean-up campaigns with community volunteers
  • Community awareness sessions on plastic waste

Objectives

  • Remove plastic and solid waste from coastal areas
  • Raise awareness of plastic pollution among coastal communities
  • Protect marine life and the fishing livelihoods that depend on it
